A Valencienne Globetrotter: Charlotte and Dave’s Australian Wedding

Posted by Kim Ironmonger January 6th, 2012

Dave+Charlotte photography has been no stranger to Valencienne. The charming husband/wife photography duo have worked with Valencienne to produce exquisite fashion shoots and creatives that have been featured in WedLuxe magazine .They capture the beauty of  Valencienne Bridal gowns with such flair, which is why I was more than excited to collaborate on our next project: creating Charlotte’s dream wedding gown.

The Valencienne gown travelled across the world, landing in sunny Australia for their nuptials…and stunning photos, which were taken by Last Forty P ercent.

Check out Green Wedding Shoes for more pictures of the stunning wedding.

Valencienne is a family tradition

Posted by Kim Ironmonger August 15th, 2011

Over the years, many clients come and go… But there are always those rare relationships that move beyond a business transaction and become long-lasting friendships.  This entry is an homage to the special bond over the years between Valencienne, Sharon Moriarty and her entire family.

The most recent Moriarty celebration took place this past August 6th, which was a very special day for Valencienne as it marks the wedding of Sharon’s youngest son and last wedding amongst her children.  Marylou and Leighton Moriarty’s wedding took place in Toronto at the Holy Rosary Church, with the grand reception held at the The Ritz-Carlton. Having been an invited guest myself, I have no other words but to describe it as an absolutely incredible day!

The relationship with Sharon Moriarty first started in 1999, when I had the pleasure of designing a gown for her daughter, Meaghan.  Sharon and I became fast friends when we realized our attention to fine details was extremely similar.  Sharon felt such a good vibe with Valencienne that we went on to make the outfits for the bridesmaids, mother of the bride, flower girls, pageboys, and grandmother of the bride – along with multiple matching accessories and a honeymoon trousseau.  Meaghan was married at Timothy Eaton on August 26, 2000. The Turkish-themed reception was held at the Royal Ontario Museum.  Looking back at these pictures below of the wedding really brings back great memories.

On August 4, 2002 the next celebration was the wedding of Sharon’s eldest son, Ryan, and his beautiful bride Katherine. The best way to describe this wedding was fun!  It was held at the Epcot Center at Walt Disney World in Florida.  As Valencienne has always been known for princess gowns, it was our time to shine; Katherine’s gown had two tones of ivory and blush pink peau du soie with silver embroidery and embellished with Swarovski crystals.  The theme here was a magical mystical garden, complete with trees and hand crafted paper-maché silk bunny rabbits.  I know it sounds ridiculous, but let me tell everyone reading this that their wedding won a prestigious decor award for ‘Wedding of the Year’ in North America because it was so unbelievable… exactly what fairy tales are made of.

It is always a joy to design for Moriarty celebrations, as Sharon let’s me be as creative as I wanted; it is seldom that a designer gets to just go crazy for a client!  Of course, Sharon once again trusted Valencienne to provide all the garments, which included all of the fun accessories. It warms my heart to think back on this wedding.

Over the years, we have also designed and created countless couture gowns for Sharon while waiting for the last Moriarty wedding to partake.  A few years went by as everyone waited anxiously for Leighton to marry his true love Marylou, and in 2010, the big engagement finally happened.  It was mega exciting; however, it was a little bittersweet because I knew this was the end of the Moriarty children’s weddings.  Sharon and I had become quite close friends and I really felt I understood how important this wedding was going to be, because it was the last.

Marylous' fabulous custom designed engagement dress

Last year, as soon as the ring was dropped into the bottom of the champagne glass, we had already started designing for Marylou and Leightons’ Cirque du Soleil-themed wedding.

Marylou is Colombian and I thought that her perfect gown should incorporate a lot of the traditions in her culture, with the ruffles at the top of the gown designed to reflect her Colombian roots along with the magnificent mantilla veil. The bodice was encrusted with micro cluster beading that gave the bodice an incredibly luxurious look. The fabric was ivory silk peau du soie with an overlay of tulle where we appliquéd and jeweled the tulle separately; the gown required over 1000 hours on beading alone but it was all a labor of love.  In total, the gown used 22 metres of silk and 17 metres of French Chantilly corded lace.

The bridesmaids’ dresses were extravagant – made of purple French corded lace, with corseted bodices – they were short with crinolined full skirts. We made tulle shawls that tied into a grand bow at the back. The girls all had magnificent matching Swarovski crystal bracelets and clutch hand bags made by Valencienne.

The mother of the bride had a gown made that was beautiful – we followed the theme of ruffles to enhance the neckline of this golden silk taffeta ball gown. It was enhanced with appliquéd lace and Swarovski crystal.

Sharons’ knee-length gown was reminiscent of a 1950’s vintage ball gown. The detail was hundreds of flat chiffon roses with a ruffle bottom – the colour was blush pink.

The flower girls were off the charts: colours of fuschia and orange embellished with ribbon detail and the pageboy garments had a special touch of custom made orange crocodile suspenders and belts, a first for Valencienne.

 Details, details, details……..

It is amazing for me to look back at all of these girls, and how each custom wedding gown captures their individual personality along with the style of their wedding.  I toast the Moriartys and all the other families that continue to support Valencienne and my passion for the craft that I have honed over the past 26 years.  It is with great gratitude to all my clients that I write this blog.

These photos are a teaser sneak peak of the wedding I took as an invited guest, can’t wait for the real professional photos!

DESIGNERS SKETCH – Their vision for Kate Middleton

Posted by Kim Ironmonger April 28th, 2011

Its sure to be the wedding of the century and the big day has finally arrived. Designers will be glued to the TV tomorrow and some are standing, scissors in hand at their cutting tables to start the new trends of this upcoming Wedding year of 2011. I am sure that most custom wedding gowns will have elements of her dress incorporated into them. What we do know is whatever Kate wears it will be elegant and breathtaking.

Valencienne did a little research to find out what other designers envisioned for Kate and here is just some of them

“We designed a ‘blossoming’ dress because we imagined her as a new Botticellian Venus.” — Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, Valentino

Karl Lagerfeld suggests a Chanel take on “the Victorian wedding dress, with a twist — high boots and open in the front.”

“I admire the balance Kate Middleton strikes between elegant and contemporary with her unmistakable style. For her, I had in mind clean lines, soft shapes and classic touches such as the boat neckline and distinctive train.” — Frida Giannini, Gucci

“White tulle veil to floor…satin bodice and cardinal hat…huge silk tulle gown with pinches, like ostrich pores…all embroidery in freshwater pearls — no glitter.” — Ralph Rucci, Chado Ralph Rucci

“Kate is a young beauty about to become a royal. She is very confident and knows her style. This gown has a long train, veil and a touch of embroidery, which adds drama, but the A-line silhouette is simple. It’s regal and sophisticated.” — Reem Acra

“…In Kate I see the natural, radiant and self-confident attitude of today’s girls. For this, I can’t help but think of an embroidered, fluid-silhouette dress in precious fabrics that will help her make an everlasting impression.” — Alberta Ferretti

“We see Kate going completely classic. We love this off-the-shoulder silhouette for her. Her beauty and grace will make any gown look magnificent.” — Mark Badgley and James Mischka, Badgley Mischka

“Something old: Victorian skirt. Something new: patchwork gown. Something borrowed: Queen Elizabeth’s veil. Something red: Elizabethan top, as red was the wedding color until 1900!” —Christian Lacroix

“…The tradition of intricate hand-pieced lacework in the high-necked bodice with elbow-length sleeves, together with the voluminous skirt of a mixture of stiff and soft silk tulle, feels regal, yet poetic.” — Vera Wang

“Kate would look beautiful in a simple, elegant silhouette — a delicate ivory lace bodice and tulle skirt with a blush lace train.” — Tory Burch

“This dress was designed to enhance Kate Middleton’s beauty through precious fabrics. The clean and contemporary lines, never redundant and beyond all specific stylistic periods, give her an eternal image of grace and elegance.” — Angela Missoni

“I love the idea of mixing traditional opulence with a very clean aesthetic for this modern-day princess.” — Jason Wu

“The royal wedding will be magical. Kate’s dress should be a modern mix of the traditional and contemporary.” — Monique Lhuillier

Designers put their heart and soul into designing the perfect gown for their clients. Whether it is for a wedding dress or an evening gown their sketches are an extention of their creativity and imagination. When I designed my gown for Kate I got so excited by the idea and I thought ‘well this may never be worn by Kate Middleton but some lovely bride in Toronto should be able to have it.’

When I saw this magnificient gown finished, I was quite proud of it. We did a photo shoot with it to use as our 2011-2012  advertising campaign. Looking at the illustrations and the wonderful photographs my mind went to a crazy place - Buckingham Palace…..I thought why not send it as a wedding present, the drawing. the photographs and a letter to Kate thanking her for this wonderful inspiration and in helping me realize this dress. Although it was created by Valencienne it was her beauty and grace that influenced this creation. A package was beautfully put together with satin ribbon and silk papers in it and it was sent to Buckingham Palace. Today, April 28th 2011, a notice came saying that they had accepted our package and it got past security. So hopefully our sketches will be in the hands of Kate Middleton herself and she can see what a Designer named Kim Ironmonger from Toronto, Canada designed for her …..You never know maybe on Kates first official visit to Canada, she and William may just pop into Valencienne and say hello …….Stop rolling your eyes …….A girl can dream…. Can’t she……………………I bet Catherine Middleton of  Chapel Row, Berkshire never thought she would be marrying a Prince……..

Piece by Piece – How a masterpiece is created

Posted by Kim Ironmonger April 17th, 2011

So what is Couture?

The original term of ‘Haute couture’ came from the exclusive French Fashion houses that refer to creation of exclusive, ornate, high fashion, custom-fitted clothes that are made to order for a specific customer. Here at Valencienne, ordering a couture gowns means every customer walks out with a one of a kind, original creation; and it all starts with a simple sketch.

For all the couture virgins out there, I will take you through all the stages it takes for the making of a couture wedding gown.

Design

I start by sitting down with every bride and striking up conversation… through asking all the right questions I can capture the bride’s sense of style and personality. I gather inspiration for each bride’s dream dress.  Next step is putting pencil to paper and just let my creative juices flowing.

Construction & Fittings

The first fitting is always the “ugly fitting” where the dress is made from canvas fabric. This fitting is only meant for us to get all the right curves and lines on your body.  Next step is to cut the real fabric, and piece by piece your custom gown is put together right before your eyes.

Embellishing

These are the final touches on the dress… hand-sewing the bling and buttons all down the back, or tacking of the lace appliqué.  No detail is too small; every aspect of the dress is given the same bit of love at Valencienne.

What an absolutely beautiful bride!

Our Kate Middleton inspired wedding gown

Posted by Kim Ironmonger April 6th, 2011
The happy couple – Kate Middleton and Prince William
Looking forward to their magical day.
The Kate Middleton inspired wedding gown by Valencienne, “Where did the concept for this gown come from?” Simple it’s the same as designing for our very own Toronto brides. We look at the client, how they dress, what’s their personal style and take into consideration there body shape and appearance. Then we take into consideration where the wedding event will take place, what time of day is the event and just how formal or not the wedding is. We also ask if there are special considerations about the day that our brides would like to integrate into their dream wedding gown. Designing a bridal gown has to take all these things into account.
Kate Middleton is long and lean; her style is classic, elegant, demure and regal. The gown has to be couture in every sense of the word but must also keep with tradition and be quite conservative. Her wedding is extremely formal as she will marry her Prince in Westminster Abbey.

She will then be hosted by the Queen for a Luncheon for 600 people which will be formal however it is midday so I felt she should maintain wearing the Jacket but the over skirt be removed for more comfort while eating.

The evening event, which will be hosted by Prince Charles, will also be formal however this is at night so Kate will remove the long skirt and wear the shorter skirt for evening. She will also remove the Jacket to expose the magnificent encrusted bustier and put the extravagant bow on the side. Quite a bit later there is a late evening soiree planned for only 100 people it’s the final event for the younger guests, it’s party time …The short skirt becomes even shorter. Kate will turn the skirt to reveal her great legs and she then has a great cocktail party gown for dancing.

Girls – that is how custom design can benefit you. Your gown can be made to suit every aspect of your personality and compliment your wedding day beautifully. The idea of custom making a wedding gown is really a special experience and makes your gown so much more personal and unique.

In our next blog we will discuss how the Kate gown was actually made. I will take you through the making of a couture wedding gown…

Hey there is a video clip of the dress featured on eTalk here (http://watch.ctv.ca/etalk/this-week/etalk—tuesday-april-5-2011/#clip445188) and you can look for the dress about three quarters of the way through the clip.

Oh My God I Am Married !!!

Posted by Kim Ironmonger April 4th, 2011

There are no words to describe our day except ‘perfection’
Looking back it was a little bit of a blur, the day went so fast. It is true what every bride says, ‘its all over in the blink of an eye’. I thought ‘WOW’ all that planning – one full year of preparing for our ultimate wedding not to mention getting quite a lot of Valencienne brides out the door along with completely re-designing our website and sketchbook which took an enormous amount of work oh and then there’s this blog. I really did need the one months holiday in Europe.
I think the best way to finish off this blog series of ‘Valencienne designer gets married’ is to show pictures of the big day along with descriptions and then finish off with a list of all of our vendors that were involved in making our day the most magical day ever!
I could not even imagine that the day was going to be that extraordinary. Jeff and I both feel that our vendors, each and every one of them went above and beyond the call of duty – we really cannot say enough, everyone worked together as a team and the level of professionalism makes me want excel in my own business.
We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
Enjoy

We would also like to thank Laura from Laura Jayne Bridal Accessories for the magnificent head piece and custom veil and the wedding cake jewels. We also wanted to thank our DJ, Michael Coombs from Prodigy Entertainment. If there was anyone else that we missed we are sorry – you were all  fantastic !!!

Flowers..Wedding Event Rentals…..and DIY Bridal Crafts.

Posted by Kim Ironmonger October 3rd, 2010

This blog is so close to my wedding ……………and to be honest, I am freaked out, so much to do and not enough time. The way in which a bride should go about flowers for their wedding is to find a florist that will organize all the other rentals necessary or to hire a wedding planner that will do it for you. With all my friends and business associates I put together our look by getting a little from each company (and sometimes a lot!)

My first stop was to a friend of mine who I have known for about thirty years. We lost contact and divine intervention brought us back together again and it was as if no time had passed. Her company name is Visions Display and they are event planners that creates huge events that involve building props, etc. For instance, if you wanted something so over the top like to turn a room into a flower garden with ponds and oversized flowers with real animals running around and maybe a working carousal – she’s your girl.

Joanne really doesn’t do many weddings because I think her creativity goes beyond some peoples budgets. If you want ‘extraordinary’, she’s your girl. I wanted our theme to include some sort of tree coming out of the top of the small mannequin with an abundance of hanging candles and foliage. The flowers we choose where mostly Dahlias, Hydrangeas and Roses. We decided to mix them with baby Champaign grapes, English ivy, salal leaves and grape vine interweaved.  Joanne and her team have painted a picture of huge candelabras that will be dripping with pearls and crystals.

She even created a wall (that was mentioned in a previous post) to display our table names and another to conceal our photo booth. Visions display has created magic that will help make this wedding an extravaganza.

Another ‘save the day’ person in my life, besides my fiancé, is Craig from Designing Trendz. Craig and Joanne have known each other for years and came together to make my dream wedding come true. Let me say girls, whatever theme you could possibly come up with Craig can execute it for you. All the trees, candles, candelabras, tassels, purple jeweled chairs, carpets, chargers and frames – too many lovely items to mention them all here have come from Designing Trendz.  He even let me add jewels to his chargers to make them more ‘Kimified’. Craig also does floral work ……when the queen came to town in July 2010 Designing trends executed the grandness of that entire event.

We will also be having Mango studios come to our wedding with a really cool, ultra funky photo booth which is nothing like you are thinking. It is a 8X10 room that is professionally lit and comes with a trunk full of amazing hats ,glasses ,masks, silly hair and funny faces that you and your friend s can put on and go in to take pictures – you control the camera with a remote and the pictures are uploaded to a website for everyone to see. Mo is based in downtown Toronto and if you want some serious fun he is your man. Mango studios is one of our premier photo studios for weddings in the city, they ROCK.

Now for DIY Projects …LOL Well, where do I start …The table name cards? We cut fabric swatches that matched the table linen and then jeweled them. We planned to have three meals and used 3, 4 or 5 jewels for the wait staff to signify which meal that guest was having. As we mentioned above we have jeweled all the chargers with purple crystal. We made a sign that would direct our guest to the right location within the hotel for our reception. We have even made ribboned-battons for everyone to wave as we leave the church. We made matching wreaths for the church doors and one for the front of the car. We designed signs for our guest’s transportation and created a playlist of music for their trip. We even made it into a CD for them to take home and included music that will be played throughout the day. We made welcome bags for our guests and filled them with local flavours. We purchased picture frames to display our table names and spray painted them for the reception wall. We decorated boxes for our sweet table. We even spray painted cans and decorated them for the back of the car. Most importantly we printed a hard cover book for our guest as a bonbonerie which includes pictures of all of them over the years.

Valencienne not only has to finish the wedding gown, Bridesmaid and flower girl dresses. We also created a custom embroidered vest for our page boy. We were also asked by friends to make dresses for the reception party .CRAZY – YES worth it ……..We hope so – we will let you all know.

This is my last blog before  the wedding . Our entertainment is a secret and a few other thing s will come on the next blog entitled Oh MY GOD I’M MARRIED BLOG…….

Décor – Wedding Designer STYLE!

Posted by Kim Ironmonger September 19th, 2010

First I know that this blog is about our personal wedding style however I just need to quickly talk about My Wedding Gown it’s all sewn together however it needs hand finishing. You know the Magic more importantly THE BLING …..how much bling is required to make a person ‘glow’ a lot so half of the design has been sewn in India the other half of the dress has been put together here in Toronto. There are thousands of Swarovski crystals,   an abundance of luscious silk peau de soie and beautiful draping - my idea was really to showcase all of my Valencienne  family talent.

Hopefully I have enticed you enough to keep visiting my blog. This is a sample of some of our beautiful embroidery.

So what was my personal  style for our wedding? It could only be one choice, our wedding would be a celebration of  the one thing in my life that I have an unlimited amount of passion for, FASHION and the fashion designers that inspire me everyday. Having an amazing fiancé, he said ‘I just want you to be happy’ so go right ahead.

We have built a wall for our wedding with picture frames that will announce to our guest where they will be  seated, All the tables were named after my most favorite designers, there were 13 in all. I thought we would sit at the Christian Dior table however Jeff said that he wanted to sit at a table naming his favorite designer “me” so Valencienne was put on the wall, front and center. (I love this guy he is my number one fan).

I had asked Jeff his thoughts for colour and he said that his favorite colour was royal purple so that is how the colours where choosen. I quickly designed an inspiration board to keep us on track ,as there is so much out there in the bridal industry, its easy to get side tracked.

The next order of business was the table centers so how could I marry my incredible love for flowers with my idea of designer table centers?  Well as luck would have it I was at Homesense one day and in front of me was this figure - I almost lost my mind, it was gold however I saw it in my mind, sprayed purple with a touch of jewels and a big silk brocade sash around its waist that would fall onto the table to create the centerpiece. OMG - The wedding decor is coming together.

I had contacted a very good friend of mine, Tina, from Covers Couture in regards to our linen rental and explained our theme ‘fashion designer meets Marie Antoinette’ and she laughed and said ‘no problem’ so one very late night we met at her place after work at 11pm to be exact and our creative minds came together. What we came up with was a purple satin base with layers upon layers of green and brown brocade which is call ‘Godiva’ I just fell in love with the name.

She pulled out some matching tassels and I said ‘I think I need every tassel you have in this place’. Tina loves her table linen as much as I love my dresses and the excitement builds. At midnight I ran out of there screaming ‘this is going to be fab’ and her saying ‘You are sooo over the top’. Driving home I thought will Jeff understand shiny purple with green and brown gold brocade mixed with Jewel toned flowers? …………..I think not! I will not discuss flowers yet, I will let him get used to green and brown brocade.
