DESIGNERS SKETCH – Their vision for Kate Middleton

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Its sure to be the wedding of the century and the big day has finally arrived. Designers will be glued to the TV tomorrow and some are standing, scissors in hand at their cutting tables to start the new trends of this upcoming Wedding year of 2011. I am sure that most custom wedding gowns will have elements of her dress incorporated into them. What we do know is whatever Kate wears it will be elegant and breathtaking.

Valencienne did a little research to find out what other designers envisioned for Kate and here is just some of them

“We designed a ‘blossoming’ dress because we imagined her as a new Botticellian Venus.” — Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, Valentino

Karl Lagerfeld suggests a Chanel take on “the Victorian wedding dress, with a twist — high boots and open in the front.”

“I admire the balance Kate Middleton strikes between elegant and contemporary with her unmistakable style. For her, I had in mind clean lines, soft shapes and classic touches such as the boat neckline and distinctive train.” — Frida Giannini, Gucci

“White tulle veil to floor…satin bodice and cardinal hat…huge silk tulle gown with pinches, like ostrich pores…all embroidery in freshwater pearls — no glitter.” — Ralph Rucci, Chado Ralph Rucci

“Kate is a young beauty about to become a royal. She is very confident and knows her style. This gown has a long train, veil and a touch of embroidery, which adds drama, but the A-line silhouette is simple. It’s regal and sophisticated.” — Reem Acra

“…In Kate I see the natural, radiant and self-confident attitude of today’s girls. For this, I can’t help but think of an embroidered, fluid-silhouette dress in precious fabrics that will help her make an everlasting impression.” — Alberta Ferretti

“We see Kate going completely classic. We love this off-the-shoulder silhouette for her. Her beauty and grace will make any gown look magnificent.” — Mark Badgley and James Mischka, Badgley Mischka

“Something old: Victorian skirt. Something new: patchwork gown. Something borrowed: Queen Elizabeth’s veil. Something red: Elizabethan top, as red was the wedding color until 1900!” —Christian Lacroix

“…The tradition of intricate hand-pieced lacework in the high-necked bodice with elbow-length sleeves, together with the voluminous skirt of a mixture of stiff and soft silk tulle, feels regal, yet poetic.” — Vera Wang

“Kate would look beautiful in a simple, elegant silhouette — a delicate ivory lace bodice and tulle skirt with a blush lace train.” — Tory Burch

“This dress was designed to enhance Kate Middleton’s beauty through precious fabrics. The clean and contemporary lines, never redundant and beyond all specific stylistic periods, give her an eternal image of grace and elegance.” — Angela Missoni

“I love the idea of mixing traditional opulence with a very clean aesthetic for this modern-day princess.” — Jason Wu

“The royal wedding will be magical. Kate’s dress should be a modern mix of the traditional and contemporary.” — Monique Lhuillier

Designers put their heart and soul into designing the perfect gown for their clients. Whether it is for a wedding dress or an evening gown their sketches are an extention of their creativity and imagination. When I designed my gown for Kate I got so excited by the idea and I thought ‘well this may never be worn by Kate Middleton but some lovely bride in Toronto should be able to have it.’

When I saw this magnificient gown finished, I was quite proud of it. We did a photo shoot with it to use as our 2011-2012  advertising campaign. Looking at the illustrations and the wonderful photographs my mind went to a crazy place - Buckingham Palace…..I thought why not send it as a wedding present, the drawing. the photographs and a letter to Kate thanking her for this wonderful inspiration and in helping me realize this dress. Although it was created by Valencienne it was her beauty and grace that influenced this creation. A package was beautfully put together with satin ribbon and silk papers in it and it was sent to Buckingham Palace. Today, April 28th 2011, a notice came saying that they had accepted our package and it got past security. So hopefully our sketches will be in the hands of Kate Middleton herself and she can see what a Designer named Kim Ironmonger from Toronto, Canada designed for her …..You never know maybe on Kates first official visit to Canada, she and William may just pop into Valencienne and say hello …….Stop rolling your eyes …….A girl can dream…. Can’t she……………………I bet Catherine Middleton of  Chapel Row, Berkshire never thought she would be marrying a Prince……..

So what is Couture?

The original term of ‘Haute couture’ came from the exclusive French Fashion houses that refer to creation of exclusive, ornate, high fashion, custom-fitted clothes that are made to order for a specific customer. Here at Valencienne, ordering a couture gowns means every customer walks out with a one of a kind, original creation; and it all starts with a simple sketch.

For all the couture virgins out there, I will take you through all the stages it takes for the making of a couture wedding gown.

Design

I start by sitting down with every bride and striking up conversation… through asking all the right questions I can capture the bride’s sense of style and personality. I gather inspiration for each bride’s dream dress.  Next step is putting pencil to paper and just let my creative juices flowing.

Construction & Fittings

The first fitting is always the “ugly fitting” where the dress is made from canvas fabric. This fitting is only meant for us to get all the right curves and lines on your body.  Next step is to cut the real fabric, and piece by piece your custom gown is put together right before your eyes.

Embellishing

These are the final touches on the dress… hand-sewing the bling and buttons all down the back, or tacking of the lace appliqué.  No detail is too small; every aspect of the dress is given the same bit of love at Valencienne.

Our Kate Middleton inspired wedding gown

The happy couple – Kate Middleton and Prince William
Looking forward to their magical day.
The Kate Middleton inspired wedding gown by Valencienne, “Where did the concept for this gown come from?” Simple it’s the same as designing for our very own Toronto brides. We look at the client, how they dress, what’s their personal style and take into consideration there body shape and appearance. Then we take into consideration where the wedding event will take place, what time of day is the event and just how formal or not the wedding is. We also ask if there are special considerations about the day that our brides would like to integrate into their dream wedding gown. Designing a bridal gown has to take all these things into account.
Kate Middleton is long and lean; her style is classic, elegant, demure and regal. The gown has to be couture in every sense of the word but must also keep with tradition and be quite conservative. Her wedding is extremely formal as she will marry her Prince in Westminster Abbey.

She will then be hosted by the Queen for a Luncheon for 600 people which will be formal however it is midday so I felt she should maintain wearing the Jacket but the over skirt be removed for more comfort while eating.

The evening event, which will be hosted by Prince Charles, will also be formal however this is at night so Kate will remove the long skirt and wear the shorter skirt for evening. She will also remove the Jacket to expose the magnificent encrusted bustier and put the extravagant bow on the side. Quite a bit later there is a late evening soiree planned for only 100 people it’s the final event for the younger guests, it’s party time …The short skirt becomes even shorter. Kate will turn the skirt to reveal her great legs and she then has a great cocktail party gown for dancing.

Oh My God I Am Married !!!

Monday, April 4th, 2011

There are no words to describe our day except ‘perfection’
Looking back it was a little bit of a blur, the day went so fast. It is true what every bride says, ‘its all over in the blink of an eye’. I thought ‘WOW’ all that planning – one full year of preparing for our ultimate wedding not to mention getting quite a lot of Valencienne brides out the door along with completely re-designing our website and sketchbook which took an enormous amount of work oh and then there’s this blog. I really did need the one months holiday in Europe.
I think the best way to finish off this blog series of ‘Valencienne designer gets married’ is to show pictures of the big day along with descriptions and then finish off with a list of all of our vendors that were involved in making our day the most magical day ever!
I could not even imagine that the day was going to be that extraordinary. Jeff and I both feel that our vendors, each and every one of them went above and beyond the call of duty – we really cannot say enough, everyone worked together as a team and the level of professionalism makes me want excel in my own business.
We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.
Enjoy

We would also like to thank Laura from Laura Jayne Bridal Accessories for the magnificent head piece and custom veil and the wedding cake jewels. We also wanted to thank our DJ, Michael Coombs from Prodigy Entertainment. If there was anyone else that we missed we are sorry – you were all  fantastic !!!
